Chlamydiainfertility
In the present culture the numbers of sexually active individuals are on the rise. As a result more and more programs are being promoted of safe sex and the prevention of contracting a sexually transmitted disease. Despite these programs however there are still cases of STD amongst the sexually active. In the United States, Chlamydia is the most common sexually transmitted infection. 65 % of those affected are in the age group below 25 years. The real figures might even be higher because Chlamydia does not cause any symptoms especially in females and therefore there is a possibility of hundreds of thousands been infected unknowingly. This is particularly dangerous because there is a probability of the woman getting Chlamydia infertility.
In the majority of females the Chlamydia travels no further than the cervix (the lower end of the uterus) however 10 % of the time it can travel into the fallopian tubes. It can cause inflammation in the fallopian tubes resulting in pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). This leads to Chlamydia infertility because fertilization will be unable to occur as the sperm and egg will not be able to easily travel through the tubes. If the Chlamydia infertility does not prevent the woman from conceiving then there is the possibility that the fertilized egg would get stuck in the tube instead of being transported to the womb resulting in an ectopic pregnancy. If the Chlamydia infertility affects it in this way this could prove particularly dangerous as the developing baby mostly passes away during early pregnancy, in addition to that there could be internal bleeding.
In the 1990s a Swedish study gave out the figures that out of every hundred women, twenty will develop PID. Two of these affected with PID will have difficulty conceiving and one will have an ectopic pregnancy. Chlamydia infertility can also have an effect on men where it can reduce the levels of sperm with a male. There is an upside nevertheless as Chlamydia can be treated with a success rate of 95 %. It is important the partner of any female who has Chlamydia also gets treated otherwise the risks of Chlamydia infertility are increased by a woman getting infected by Chlamydia again.
A person might feel uncomfortable about informing their partner about the fact that they have Chlamydia but the partner should be informed as quick as possible to prevent Chlamydia infertility. The fact is that a moment of embarrassment cannot be equated to the fact that an individual prevents their partner from having a natural pregnancy because of Chlamydia infertility. Always remember to keep yourself regularly tested for all STD's and participate in safe sexual practices if you are sexually active. Chlamydia though common is still dangerous with the consequences of Chlamydia infertility accordingly it is only reasonable to always be safe.
